Black Ogrun Conversions: Part 1

Since I received the first three Black Ogrun models I've been thinking about what I could do with them. I really want to do away with the whole pirate feel so I dug through my bits looking for "something". I didn't really know what I was looking for but I found it.

Lich Lord Venethrax has some serious cryxian vibes going on and it would be pretty cool if I could steal his sword and a shoulder plate for the Black Ogrun. The sword and gauntlet would be unaltered but the shoulder pad would have the "beak" removed and end up like this.

If I add some grey stuff I think I can get them looking like Cryx versions of Warmongers. I've done some attempts at copying the gear with Easy Mold but it isn't working out well enough. That could be because of my very limited experience with the stuff, but if it doesn't improve I might have to find some other way of casting (If you have ideas, links, guides, whatever I'd love to have them)

They also need harpoons in order to be tournament legal, but the models become really crowded if I add the ones they come with on top of a sword and shoulder armor, not to mention the fact that the harpoons look clumsy and ugly. I did try some Circle Wolf Rider spears on them but they were tiny and I want these guys to look brutal and threatening (since their job is to attract attention and survive it).

  1. Maybe the Ogrun Warspears will be more in-scale? Or you can order the cannons from the Ogrun Assault Corps and attach spear heads to the front of their cannons? I believe even the POW of the weapons are the same, so it'd be a really appropriate conversion.

    1. The Ogrun Assault Corpse cannons are all right handed so I'd need to find another sword arm, and it would be worth considering if they didn't charge 45 bucks for ten of them. The Warspears parts are not on sale at the parts store so I'd have to find them elsewhere.

I've also looked at Croak Hunter extra spears with chains attached, but everything has a huge price tag and with the piles of cash I've already put down for the worst models in my collection I'm loathe to spend more :D

    2. I've found that conversions in Warmachine/Hordes are rarely the cheaper alternative to buying the model, but really more of a luxury for customization. The conversion=cheaper practice typically only applies to GW products, from what I've seen.

Although I did just realize you could probably get some Leadbelchers from the Ogre Kingdoms range too, but then again, it's probably just more expensive considering how many you'd need to get.

    3. I've actually been looking hard at the Thundertusk Harpoon Launchers at 4 dollars a piece. I've also been looking at Tyranid guns for a more "I get you with flying intestines" feel.

I did find the Warspears packs on eBay (about a dollar each) so there's also the option of going all in on the Warspears gear because 25 dollars will buy me 10 sets of arms and backpacks (that's close to what I'm willing to spend).

I would prefer Warspears packs, Venethrax Swords, and Venethrax Shoulders as that would look damn nice.

  2. I know this is no longer an option for you because you have started to buy the models already but have you considered any alternate model ranges for them?

I too would like to try out a couple of boarding party units but I don't really like the pirate them. I'd prefer they stuck tot he steam punk cryxian theme. I want them in menacing armor.. are there any alternate models out there?

    2. These girls here were high on the list if I had the option of using other models: http://www.freebooterminiatures.de/sites/default/files/pub/shop/GOB016_sb_0567.jpg

  3. Well I bought the Warspear Quivers. 13 dollars including transport for ten of them is alright and that lets me focus on everything else.

  4. Hmm, Doom Reaver swords might be worth considering if all else fails.

  5. At least the doom reaver swords look kinda similar to the venny sword.

  6. The Venethrax sword turned out to be a pain in the behind so I've just ordered the Fell Blades.

    1. I did actually try those but the gun is a little longer than the model is high so it looks silly (I had a couple from my robogear kits). Thanks anyway :)
